Project Aware

What is Project AWARE?

Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education) is a SAMSHA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration) Grant that promotes youth mental health awareness among schools and the community, to improve connections in service for school age youth.

  • Project AWARE’s purpose is to increase awareness of youth mental health, provide mental health training to school personnel and other youth-serving adults to be able to detect and respond to mental health concerns and connect students and their families to appropriate mental health services in the community.

The AWARE LMHP offers short-term individual and/or small group counseling to students referred by school staff, parents or identified by the universal screening data. This is done by obtaining parent/guardian written consent.

Project AWARE assists with reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and aims to create a positive school environment and help provide students and their families with resources to be successful.

  • Calming Room- This room is located at the Elementary and may be used by overstimulated students who require time to decompress before resuming classroom instruction.

SPARCS (Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress) Groups for students 12-21 years old learning to manage symptoms of chronic trauma or stress. All school counselors and the LMHP have been trained.

Training all our school personnel on Youth Mental Health and First Aid (YMHFA) on how to detect and respond to Mental Health concerns.

PAX/Good Behavior Game Training- self-regulation interventions and strategies for the classroom. Some of our Elementary staff have had this training.

Community/Parent Nights- We have had speakers such as Mary Nhin discussing Ninja Life Hacks and Hope Driven Parenting giving tips on raising happy resilient children.

Implementing EIS (Early Identification System) the universal screener to collect data to identify student needs and help provide universal prevention programs and/or curriculums for the district.

Meet Our Counselors

Through Project AWARE, an additional licensed counselor has been added to the staff at Davis Public Schools The AWARE counselor will provide support services for students and will help coordinate educational opportunities for parents and the community.

In addition to the AWARE counselor, each school in the district is staffed with highly qualified school counselors. School counselors are vital members of every child’s education team. They educate students in the area of academic achievement, college and career readiness and social/emotional development, helping students become productive members of society and well adjusted adults. We are blessed to have these counselors in our schools.
